It is a traditional art form of Tancheng County, Shandong Province and is one of the national intangible cultural heritages. Originating in Fannian Village, Gangshang Town, Tancheng County, Linyi City, Shandong Province, it has a history of over 600 years, dating back to the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties.
Legend has it that the ancestor of the Fan family, Fan Mu, was the first to make wooden spinning toys. Drawing from the woodworking principle of rotating a drill bit with a belt, he adapted hand-operated tools into foot-operated ones, creating simple spinning wheels, handles, and other everyday items. This innovation eventually led to the production of spinning toys such as rattles and hammers, marking the inception of toy-making in Fannian Village. Over generations, descendants of the Fan family continued to research and innovate, gradually enriching the variety of wooden spinning toys. From the Ming Dynasty to the Republican era, Tancheng wooden spinning toys underwent a lengthy period of development, steadily maturing over time.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Tancheng wooden spinning toys reached their peak, boasting over 500 traditional and modern products spanning ten series. Production involved 400 workshops utilizing 5,000 machine tools and engaging over 10,000 workers, resulting in an annual output of over 100 million toys. Today, the tradition of Tancheng wooden spinning toys continues into the 19th generation, offering nearly 700 varieties across 10 categories with various color combinations. They are widely exported to more than 30 countries and regions, including Japan, South Korea and Singapore.
